Obituary

Another great Soldier and Fallen Hero have been released from duty, passed from our ranks on  August 20, 2020 and moved on to his heavenly home.  SFC  (Ret) Fred Michael Letort, age 72, a retired member of the MS Army National Guard who had served within the 138th S&S BN, 1355th S&S Company and Desert Storm has departed and gone to a better place with our good Lord.

It takes a special person to serve within the military for their country giving up their family time, comfort and safety for their country ultimately for all Americans to enjoy their freedoms, safety, and way of life.  We now applaud you for your service to our country.  A special message from General Douglas McArthur still remains applicable today for our servicemen that have passed:  “Old Soldiers never die; they just fade away”.

Rest in Peace Soldier.  We applaud your patriotism and brave efforts in serving our country and your family for their support of your service.  We thank you for your service.   Without your efforts and your families’ support, this country would not stand so boldly, shine so bright and live so free.

You now have earned a rest, so go fly with the Angels, go rest high on that mountain, your work on earth is done.  Go to heaven a-shoutin’ Love for the Father and the Son.

May God continue to look over you and your family.  “Stand At Rest Soldier”

Fred Michael Letort was born to Fred and Vonceil Letort on January 10, 1948, and passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2020 following a long battle with leukemia and lymphoma.  He was 72 years old, and he was the eldest of three children reared in the St. Martin Community.  Michael loved participating in sports and excelled in football, basketball and baseball.  He served as the quarterback for his St. Martin High School team and led the team to the first defeat of their longtime rival, Ocean Springs, back in 1965.  He was honored to be selected on the Mississippi High School All Star team in 1966.  Michael attended the University of Southern Mississippi on a football scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation.  His professional career began as a Recreation Therapist at the South Mississippi Regional Center in Long Beach, MS, and then transferred to the Quality Assurance Service before retiring as the Safety Specialist and Risk manager for the center in 2016.  For several years, he served as the coordinator for the South MS Special Olympics, hosted by the South MS Regional Center and held at Keesler Air Force Base.  After his retirement, he served on the Advisory Board for the South MS Regional Center.  He truly enjoyed working for the center and loved serving his special needs clients.

He served 28 years with the Army National Guard, and was proud to be a veteran serving his country in the Gulf War during Desert Storm and developing a special brotherhood with the men and women with whom he served.

Michael was of the Catholic faith and served as a member of the International Order of Alhambra, a Catholic Fraternal Order serving the intellectually and developmentally disabled.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Michael leaves behind to cherish his memory, two sons, Michael Ryan Letort of West Biloxi, and Cullen Letort (Tara), of Metairie, LA; two grandsons, Eli and Asher of Metairie, LA; his brother Kim Letort (Joanna) of St. Martin; his sister, Penny Sorrells (Donnie) of Slidell, LA; and his former wife, Nancy Ryan Letort of St. Martin, as well as many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
